This is a Chinese saying that goes "人人为我,我为人人"
—"As I have received (from people), so shall I give".

At first glance, this—paying it forward—sounds like such a nice gesture, isn't it? it does reflect the consumerist society that we live in. This saying is still one that brings the focus back to self, which leads me to question: If no one pays you, will you still pay it forward? Or rather, if no one does good to you, will you still do good?

As Christians, we are called to do good. But there's a catch: It is in response to our Father in heaven who has done good to us. Not 人 (man), but 神 (God). His good is like nothing on earth, however, simply because we do not deserve it. Yet the holy God has loved us sinful man. So we must do the same to others, even if they do not seem to deserve it. And we are not just to do 'good', but to do 'good' out of love as He first loved us—with unconditional love. Agape.

"[34] A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. [35] By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35 ESV)

May the Lord's name be glorified in all that we do.
