skyfall

Thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't simply another action flick — there was actually effort to place proper themes that ran deeper than guns and explosions.

The sub-themes of tension betwixt new technology and old school, how less is more, and the new generation and the old adaptation added depth to the show, and so did the motif of "resurrection" for Bond and the attempted exploration of his um, bond with M (which I felt if given more attention would make the movie even better)... I liked that the Bond movie type scenes were either slipped in in the uncheesiest manner possible (but still a tad cheesy, which is its badge after all) and even given a nice twist — "shaken not stirred" wasn't mentioned verbally but was alluded to. A little espionage adventure for the viewer perhaps? :)

I liked the pace of the story all the way through, which was unlike most action movies that felt as though their endings were filmed to the sound of their budget running out. (Read that this movie was initially prepared many years ago but due to MGM's financial woes they out it on hold. Well, it definitely became money well spent!) The climax was given generous screen time and boy, the tension.... Kept me on the edge for as long as they fancied.

Of course, there are still weaknesses in the movie such as the short-lived presence of Severine looked quite contrived in the plot that needed a femme fatale; Eve who had little on-screen chemistry with Bond; and a strange nagging unsatisfactory depiction of Silva albeit the Bardem's acting was excellent.

I've not watched plenty of Bond movies, but I guess everybody loves a good spy thriller. I wish I could find the time to watch more movies though Argo is next!
