caketales

passion and desire and excitement are like icing covering a humble sponge cake. it is the first thing that attracts you and inspires you to get it out of the shelf and dig your hands and teeth into it pronto. its sweetness instantly tickles your fancy, and you think: ah! what a yummy cake. but you take another bite, and when your tastebuds are used to the sweetness and the rest of the cake cuts through, you realise that what makes a cake is the cake itself. icing is just pure sugar; cream is just pure fat. there is little complexity in it, and too much is also bad for you. but the cake — it fills your cavities with a gentle sprong and melts flavours onto your tongue. the cake sponge on its own surely looks dull and mundane, and most effort and care is needed to create it (ready-mixes are often terrible to taste), but it is cake. perhaps this is where i have to cut through the layers; passion and desire and excitement tantalise, but only for a while. what has true bite is commitment and responsibility in the inmost parts, and that which is for the sake of the One who has true discerning tastebuds. passion and desire and excitement are surely not useless and to be vilified, for they do light up our eyes, but know that they melt away and do not last. to find a perfect balance for the two — perhaps that is what will bring enduring passion and desire and excitement to a sensitive palate.
